We hope to see some of you there! Students will wear their P.E. uniforms. They may wear ball caps or visors but not sunglasses. Please be sure to put sunscreen on your child BEFORE school. Please bring in a dollar for the cake walk and canned goods. There is a contest amongst the activity day teams to see who can bring in the most canned goods! Happy May! This week St. Jerome is trying out a new lunch system. The students will play the first 20 minutes of lunchtime and eat during the last 20 minutes. Some school districts have implemented this system and it has shown to increase learning and decrease visits to the health office in the afternoon hours.

In Reading, we will be working on the long e sound as well changing words from singular to plural. We are continuing to work on 3-digit addition and subtraction in Math and we will complete our chapter on Thursday with the Ch. 9 test. In English, we will have a test on Tuesday on adverbs. In Social Studies, we will begin working on our Career Reports, so please make sure your child returns their outline on Tuesday along with one other resource that they can use (i.e. book, article, etc)!

Homework

Monday
Reading-Worksheet
Math-Worksheet
Spelling-Activity #1;
Social Studies- Career interview due tomorrow!
Reporters-Be ready for Friday!

Tuesday
Reading-Worksheet
Math-Worksheet
Spelling-Activity #5

Wednesday
Reading-Worksheet
Math-Ch. 9 Practice Test; Test tomorrow!
Spelling-Activity #4

Thursday
Reading-Worksheet
Math-practice basic facts
Spelling-Activity #2; test tomorrow!
Reporters-Be Ready!

Spelling Words
calves
halves
leaves
lives
shelves
wolves
Challenge
ceiling
neither
High Frequency
road
young
eight
round
start

Reporters
Life- Eva
Poetry- Tony
Fun- Tuitupou
Vocabulary- Cydney
Weather- Chace
News- Meghan

Week of April 25

Welcome Parents! We hope you enjoyed the Carnival! The rides and booths will be taken down on Monday; drop off and pick up will remain in the U-shape. Regular car line will resume on Tuesday. We will continue to practice for 1st Communion during Religion. First Communion is this Sunday at the 9:00 am Mass. The students will need to arrive at 8:30 and meet in the back of the church. We look forward to this important milestone in your child's faith. We also encourage those who are not making their 1st Communion to come to mass on Sunday to support their friends as they receive their sacrament!

In Math, the students have done a great job with the addition of three-digit numbers. We are starting a new unit in Reading and will have a Spelling test on Friday. We are studying the long -e sound spelled "ie" and "ey" and the -gh, -ph, and -lf sounds as well as determining the difference between realism and fantasy. We are continuing our work with adverbs in English.

We welcome Ms. Levin to the St. Jerome staff as the Science teacher. Mr. Deltoro will be taking over the position of 8th grade homeroom/Jr. High Math teacher for the remainder of this year.

In Social Studies we will be hosting a career day. We have parent volunteers coming in on Tuesday and Thursday to discuss their professions with the class. The students will be bringing home a Career Report Outline this week. The students will choose someone to interview (either in person or over the phone) about their career. They will use the interview as the basis for an in-class report. Please look for more information about the report requirements in your child's Take Home folder.

Homework

Monday
Reading-Worksheet
Math-Worksheet
Spelling-Activity #5;
Social Studies- Career interview due Friday!
Reporters-Be ready for Friday!

Tuesday
Reading-Worksheet
Math-Worksheet
Spelling-Activity #3
Social Studies- Career interview

Wednesday
Reading-Worksheet
Math-Worksheet
Spelling-Activity #7
Social Studies- Career interview

Thursday
Reading-Worksheet
Math-Worksheet
Spelling-Activity #10; test tomorrow!
Social Studies- Career interview due tomorrow!
Reporters-Be Ready!

Spelling Words
calf
half
laugh
phone
rough
tough
Challenge
money
cookie
High Frequency
sound
kept
above
few
number

Reporters
Life- Benny
Poetry- Virginia
Fun- Colin
Vocabulary- Sebastian
Weather- Gevani
News- Nia Mosby

Week of April 19

Welcome Parents!

Hope everyone enjoyed the nice short week last week! All make-up tests and quizzes need to be complete before then.

Soup Night is Wednesday Feb. 24th!

Homework

Monday
Reading-Worksheet
Math-Worksheet
Spelling-Activity #2
Reporters-Be ready for Friday!

Tuesday
Reading-worksheet
Math-worksheet
Spelling-Activity #3

Wednesday
Reading-Worksheet
Math-worksheet
Spelling-Activity #5

Thursday
Reading-Worksheet
Math-Worksheet
Spelling-Activity #1; Test tomorrow!
Reporters, be ready!

Reporters
Life-Tony
Weather-Niah O.
News- Eva
Poetry-Justin
Vocab-Leah
Fun-Meghan

Spelling Words
awful
bought
claw
draw
saw
straw
High Frequency
family
morning
paper
really
finally
Challenge
whoever
wrong

February 15-20

Happy President's Day! We hope everyone enjoyed their long Valentine's Day weekend. This week is another fun week in 2nd grade! In math, we are still working on subtraction with regrouping. Our phonics this week focuses on the vowel pattern a, al, and au; our other concentration is silent consonants. In English, we are finishing our unit on adjectives and will take the Unit 4 test on Thursday. Lastly, our social studies lessons this week will be centered around President's Day.

Reminders:
Ash Wednesday is Wednesday Feb. 17th! Please arrive by 7:45 a.m. as we have an all school mass at 8 a.m. The first soup night will also be that night!

Homework

Monday
No School

Tuesday
Social Studies-Worksheet
Math-Worksheet
Spelling-#10
Reporters-Be ready!

Wednesday
Reading-Worksheet
Math-Worksheet
Spelling-#3

Thursday
Reading-Worksheet
Math-Worksheet
Spelling-#2; Test tomorrow!
Reporters-Be Ready!

Spelling Words
climb
comb
lamb
kneel
knit
knot
Challenge
chalk
sauce
High Frequency
story
able
early
own
thought

Reporters
Life- Bailey
Weather-Tuitupou
News-Amy
Poetry-Gevani
Vocab-Kayla
Fun-Nia Mosby

Feb 8-12

Welcome Parents!

We hope you enjoyed seeing our classroom at Open House last week. We enjoyed seeing you again and we hope you had an opportunity to view some of your child's work.

This week is regular schedule with the exception of Friday, February 12th. Since Valentine's Day falls on a weekend this year, we will be having our party on Friday Feb. 12th. If your child wishes to hand out valentines to the class, please make sure that you have one for every child in the class. We have 25 students. Your child may sign their name on the card, but please DO NOT address the cards. The students will be placing one valentine on each student's desk.

This week we will also be starting a new unit in math. We will be working on subtraction that involves regrouping or "borrowing" as it is also known. This is a new concept for the students and some may need extra help with their homework.

No School Monday Feb. 15th President's Day!

Homework

Monday
Reading-worksheet
Math-worksheet
Spelling-#3
Reporters-be ready for Friday!

Tuesday
Reading-worksheet
Math-worksheet
Spelling-#4

Wednesday
Reading-worksheet
Math-worksheet
Spelling-#5

Thursday
Reading-worksheet
Math-worksheet
Spelling-#9; test tomorrow!
Reporters-be ready!

Spelling Words
bread
breath
spread
sweat
thread
weather
ready
today
eraser
helper
large
says
wash

Reporters
Life-Cydney
Weather-Benny
News-Colin
Poetry-Chace
Vocab-Azure
Fun-Sebastian

February 1-5

Welcome Parents!
This week is an exciting week as it is Catholic Schools Week which happens to coincide with our 100th day of school on Friday!

The schedule of the week is as follows:

Sunday
Please attend Mass at St. Jerome to thank God for all the blessings that He has given you!

Monday
Community Appreciation: The entire school is having a canned food drive. We hope you all had a relaxing and peaceful Christmas vacation. We are happy to be back at work and eager to teach your children again! We are looking forward to a successful and happy second trimester together. Hope you are too!

Please note:
Mrs. Sederstrom will NOT be returning to the 2nd grade classroom. We are currently searching for her replacement. I will continue to work my normal schedule of Monday, Tuesday, and every other Friday. Please call or send an e-mail if you have any questions or concerns. I will happy to help you!

Reminders:
Please remember that students are responsible for copying down their spelling words into their Student Agenda each week. School will resume on Tuesday January 5, 2010.

The Christmas program will take place Thursday December 17th at 7 p.m. Children should come dressed in their Christmas best. No jeans or sweatshirts are permitted. This is a dress up occasion (dresses and skirts for the girls, dress pants and collared shirts for the boys). Children should meet in the classroom at 6:30 p.m. so that we can line up and walk over to church together. It is important that the children arrive at school on time. Please refer to the Tuesday Envelope for additional details.

On Friday December 18th we would like to have a little Christmas celebration with the students from 9:30-10:30 a.m. If you would like to contribute food or help with the craft, please contact our room mothers, Mrs. Dionne or Mrs. Mueller. We already have the Christmas craft, but we will need napkins, a treat, and a drink for 25 students. We could also use two or three parents to help students with the holiday craft.

Spelling Words

Basic Words
I'll
I'm
can't
didn't
he's
she's

High Frequency
best
sometimes
across
either
toward

Challenge
spoon
through

No Reporters this week!

Homework

Monday Dec. 14th
Reading- worksheet
Math- worksheet
Spelling- activity number one

Tuesday Dec. 15th
Reading- worksheet
Math- worksheet
Spelling- activity number two

Wednesday Dec. 16th
Reading- worksheet
Math- practice basic facts
Spelling- activity number three

Thursday Dec. 17th
No Homework! We will also be writing the final copy of our first story. The students did a nice job going through the writing process.

There is a Social Studies review packet coming home with the students tonight! Please read each lesson summary and follow the directions for the "Before You Read" and the "After You Read." Please have your child return their math book tomorrow. The Reading Practice Book will no longer be sent home. Instead, there will be a single math and reading worksheet sent home every night in the students' "Take Home" folder. These two worksheets need to be completed and returned the next day.

The spelling homework is also changing. Instead of turning in the spelling homework on Friday, the students will be assigned one activity from the Spelling Contract each night and it will need to be returned the next day. This means that the students will have three things to return each day: a math worksheet, a reading worksheet, and a spelling activity.

You are still responsible for making sure that your child copies down the spelling words in their Student Agenda on Monday night, reads with you 20 minutes each night and that you check their homework and sign their Student Agenda. All of these items will be checked and counted for homework each day!

Reminders
1. The math workbook will be used most nights for homework but will not need to be brought to school everyday. Please tear out the nightly homework, complete it, and return it in the homework folder each day. We will, however, be working in the reading practice book in class and at home. Therefore, the reading workbook will need to come back and forth each day. You do not need to tear out the pages for the reading workbook, just complete the pages and bring it back attached to the book. We feel privileged to be teaching your child. It promises to be a very exciting and rewarding year. Here is some information you need to know:

Arrival/Dismissal
On Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, school starts promptly at 7:55 a.m. and dismissed at 3:00 p.m. Our Class Mass is on Thursdays and we are expected to be at school by 7:45 a.m. to walk over to church on time. Every Friday, school starts at 7:55 a.m. and dismissed at 12:30 p.m.

If you arrive after 8:00 a.m., please go directly to the office before you come to class. Please note that more than three tardies in a trimester equals a detention.

For your child’s safety, if you need to take your child out of class early (even five minutes) you must sign your child out in the office. The office will then call the classroom and your child will meet you in the office.

Snack
To maximize alertness, it is recommended that you send a healthy snack to school for your child to eat at the first recess. Please have the snack packed in a bag! Loose snacks usually end up on the floor and is unsanitary.

Birthdays
On your child’s birthday you are encouraged to take them to the 8:00 a.m. Mass to celebrate God’s gift of life. They are welcome to wear free dress. However, make sure that it is dress up not dress down. They will receive a Happy Birthday certificate, sticker and book mark from us. Birthdays are special days and we look forward to celebrating your child’s.

Please know that due to the nutrition policy and many food allergies, edible treats are not allowed. However, you may “treat” the class with non-food items, such as pencils, erasers, stickers, a book for the classroom, etc. Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this policy.

Homework
Homework assignments will be written in the student agenda book and must be signed each night. The agenda signature will be checked each morning and counts toward the homework grade. Assignments will be kept in a folder handed out every afternoon and due every morning unless otherwise noted in the agenda book. Each week homework will be posted for the week on our class blog at http://secondgradesjs.blogspot.com/ Check the site regularly for updates and news.

Your child must also read daily for at least 15 minutes, alone and/or with a family member. We also strongly encourage nightly review of basic math facts to 18. In addition, 5-10 minutes set aside for conversation specifically focused on the daily activities in school is highly recommended.

We recommend that your child have a regular space to do homework. Also, paper (lined and unlined), pencils, scissors, ruler, pencil sharpener, and glue may be needed for homework assignments. Your child should NOT bring these additional supplies to school.

Questionnaire
We would appreciate it if you would fill out the enclosed questionnaire. This information will give us a head start in understanding your child’s needs. Please return the questionnaire by Friday, August 28th.

Friday Folders
Students will bring home a “Friday Folder” every week. It will include all the tests and graded work completed during class. Not all work done in school will be included in this folder (we keep a file of work from students to review with parents at Parent-Teacher conferences). Please review and take all the contents out. Friday folders are due back at school on Mondays.

Scholastic Book Orders
We will send a book order form once a month. The completed form will be due one week from the day it comes home. Please make all checks out to Scholastic. You can now order books online and pay with credit card. More information will be sent out with the first flier. The more books your child is exposed to the more they will develop their reading skills.

Important Dates:
Thursday, August 27th
5 Clues in a Bag homework assignment due

Friday, August 28th
Questionnaire due

Communication
Again, please write a note in your child’s student agenda book if you have any immediate questions or comments. You may also contact us by leaving a message at 310-670-1678 x212 or secondgradesjs@gmail.com. We will respond as soon as possible. Our schedule is as follows: Monday & Tuesday – Mrs. Callanen, Wednesday & Thursday – Mrs. Sederstrom, Fridays – Alternate.

We are truly looking forward to a terrific year with your child. We know that with your support we will have a very successful year together in second grade!

Thank you,
Mrs. Sederstrom
Mrs. Callanen

First Homework Assignment

5 Clues in a Bag
Homework Assignment
Due Thursday, August 27th

Dear Second Graders,

Here is your very first homework assignment this year. We can’t wait to hear all about your summer adventures. Let’s play a game! Can you guess what I did this summer?

Here are the rules:

Collect 5 items that are clues to things you did over the summer that will fit in the zip lock bag provided to you in your homework folder.

For example, a toy airplane could represent a trip you took with your family. Goggles could represent swim lessons that you took. A movie ticket could represent a favorite movie you saw this summer. You may use real items, (ex. coins from a foreign country, key chain from Disneyland, shells from the beach) pictures from the internet, photos that you have taken or take a photo of something that doesn’t fit in your bag.

1. Please do not include clothing or valuable items.
2. Use the bag provided (bigger bags or items will not be accepted).
3.
