Second Grade News Dec. 14th - 18th

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

This is our last week of school before the Christmas break! School will resume on Tuesday January 5, 2010.

The Christmas program will take place Thursday December 17th at 7 p.m. Children should come dressed in their Christmas best. No jeans or sweatshirts are permitted. This is a dress up occasion (dresses and skirts for the girls, dress pants and collared shirts for the boys). Children should meet in the classroom at 6:30 p.m. so that we can line up and walk over to church together. It is important that the children arrive at school on time. Please refer to the Tuesday Envelope for additional details.

On Friday December 18th we would like to have a little Christmas celebration with the students from 9:30-10:30 a.m. If you would like to contribute food or help with the craft, please contact our room mothers, Mrs. Dionne or Mrs. Mueller. We already have the Christmas craft, but we will need napkins, a treat, and a drink for 25 students. We could also use two or three parents to help students with the holiday craft.

This is the last week of the 1st trimester! Can you believe it? The second grade students are working very hard and have accomplished a lot since the first day of school.

This week, we will be testing the students in Reading, Social Studies, and Math. We will also be writing the final copy of our first story. The students did a nice job going through the writing process.

There is a Social Studies review packet coming home with the students tonight! Please read each lesson summary and follow the directions for the "Before You Read" and the "After You Read." Following the review will help the students play an active role in studying for their test tomorrow. The packets DO NOT need to be returned.

Second Grade News November 9 - 13

Important Information Regarding Second Grade Homework!

The second grade homework is changing. Please have your child return their math book tomorrow. The Reading Practice Book will no longer be sent home. Instead, there will be a single math and reading worksheet sent home every night in the students' "Take Home" folder. These two worksheets need to be completed and returned the next day.

The spelling homework is also changing. Instead of turning in the spelling homework on Friday, the students will be assigned one activity from the Spelling Contract each night and it will need to be returned the next day. This means that the students will have three things to return each day: a math worksheet, a reading worksheet, and a spelling activity.

You are still responsible for making sure that your child copies down the spelling words in their Student Agenda on Monday night, reads with you 20 minutes each night and that you check their homework and sign their Student Agenda. All of these items will be checked and counted for homework each day!

Reminders
1. No School Wednesday Nov. 11th (Veteran's Day)

Second Grade News November 2nd - 6th

Welcome to November! We hope everyone had a safe and Happy Halloween. We loved seeing all of the second graders in their costumes. All Souls Day Mass is Monday at 11:15 a.m. Please join us if you can!

Reminders for the Week
Please remember to sign your child's Student Agenda every night. It counts for homework and your child will be marked down if the signature is missing!

If both sides of a math page are not assigned for homework, please turn it in with the side assigned completed. It will be returned the next day in the "Take Home" folder for you to keep until the other side is assigned.

POSTPONED: We have decided to offer a re-test of Chapter 2 for all students who received less than a "3" on the Chapter 2 math test.

11/6: Student Council has decided that Twin Day will be Friday for students who demonstrate responsible and respectful behavior in and out of the classroom all week. If your child is awarded this privilege, they will receive a note in their "Take Home Folder" on Thursday night. We hope all 2nd graders will have a chance to participate so plan early!

Portols to Science
This is a new program similar to Gateway to Art! Each child needs to bring in $10 for supplies needed to complete the projects. The experiments will all be done during science class and the students will have the opportunity to participate four times this year! If you would like to volunteer your time please contact the office.

Welcome back! Hope you all enjoyed the nice long weekend! It was much needed after the last two weeks of testing. The students worked very hard and did a nice job.

Today, we begin Parent-Teacher Conferences! Please remember to sign up if you have not already done so. You can find the sign up sheet hanging in the hall in Building A. Tomorrow we have school mass at 11:15 a.m. Please have your child wear their regular school uniform! No P.E. tomorrow!

There have been some questions about the math homework. If your child has already completed a math page that has been assigned, please DO NOT go ahead! Instead, have your child turn in the math page that has already been completed. We have double checked the homework this week and it is correct. Reporters

September 21, 2009

Dear Second Grade,

Beginning this week we will start reporters! Every Monday, six students will be picked to give a report on Friday. They include the Fun Reporter, Weather Reporter, Life Reporter, News Reporter, Poetry Reporter, and Vocabulary Reporter. Each reporter will report on their given topic.

Fun Reporter- gives reviews on movies, books, restaurants, museums, games, theme parks, etc. or may share up to three appropriate jokes

Weather Reporter- tells us the forecast for the weekend as well as the air quality and phase of the moon

Life Reporter- reports on any hobbies they may have. They can share photos, pictures they’ve drawn, stories they’ve written, trophies they’ve won, or anything else that has to do with their life

News Reporter- tells us what’s happening in the news. Some examples include new art exhibits at various museums, community festivals coming up, sport reports, etc. Parents, please make sure that the topics are age appropriate.

Poetry Reporter- reads us a poem they like or one that they wrote.

Vocabulary Reporter- tries to find a word that they think the class won’t know and shares it with us. The word may be in a different language. Students will be expected to say the word, give us 3 clues for guessing its definition, and use it in a sentence.

If you or your children have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us. However, the goal is to keep it fun and simple. Thank you and happy reporting!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Callanen & Mrs. Sederstrom

Important note on workbooks!

September 1, 2009

Dear Second Grade,

We apologize for the confusion with the workbooks yesterday! The math workbook will be used most nights for homework but will not need to be brought to school everyday. Please tear out the nightly homework, complete it, and return it in the homework folder each day. We will, however, be working in the reading practice book in class and at home. Therefore, the reading workbook will need to come back and forth each day. You do not need to tear out the pages for the reading workbook, just complete the pages and bring it back attached to the book. Please call or email if you have any questions 310-670-1678 x212 or 2ndgradesjs@gmail.com.

Thank you,
Mrs. Callanen and Mrs. Sederstrom

It was a great first three days last week. We are looking forward to our first full week of school. There are some important things for you to know as a second grade family.

Our P.E. days are Mondays and Wednesdays. Mass is on Thursdays (please arrive by 7:45am).

Homework will be posted each Monday on our class blog at http://secondgradesjs.blogspot.com/. Please bookmark this page as soon as possible, as it will be updated each week with news, homework, and spelling words. If you are unable to access a computer, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can send home a paper copy each week.

A note about spelling words: students will be responsible for studying and learning spelling words on their own. Students should copy the words into their Student Agenda each week. The page this week is p. 13. Words will be posted on the blog on Mondays and tests will be on Fridays.

Second Grade News - Important Information

Second Grade News
Mrs. Sederstrom and Mrs. Callanen’s Class
August 26, 2009

Welcome to the start of a new school year! We feel privileged to be teaching your child. It promises to be a very exciting and rewarding year. Here is some information you need to know:

Arrival/Dismissal
On Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, school starts promptly at 7:55 a.m. and dismissed at 3:00 p.m. Our Class Mass is on Thursdays and we are expected to be at school by 7:45 a.m. to walk over to church on time. Every Friday, school starts at 7:55 a.m. and dismissed at 12:30 p.m.

If you arrive after 8:00 a.m., please go directly to the office before you come to class. Please note that more than three tardies in a trimester equals a detention.

For your child’s safety, if you need to take your child out of class early (even five minutes) you must sign your child out in the office. The office will then call the classroom and your child will meet you in the office.

Snack
To maximize alertness, it is recommended that you send a healthy snack to school for your child to eat at the first recess. Please have the snack packed in a bag! Loose snacks usually end up on the floor and is unsanitary.

Birthdays
On your child’s birthday you are encouraged to take them to the 8:00 a.m. Mass to celebrate God’s gift of life. They are welcome to wear free dress. However, make sure that it is dress up not dress down. They will receive a Happy Birthday certificate, sticker and book mark from us. Birthdays are special days and we look forward to celebrating your child’s.

Please know that due to the nutrition policy and many food allergies, edible treats are not allowed. However, you may “treat” the class with non-food items, such as pencils, erasers, stickers, a book for the classroom, etc. Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this policy.

Homework
Homework assignments will be written in the student agenda book and must be signed each night. The agenda signature will be checked each morning and counts toward the homework grade. Assignments will be kept in a folder handed out every afternoon and due every morning unless otherwise noted in the agenda book. Each week homework will be posted for the week on our class blog at http://secondgradesjs.blogspot.com/ Check the site regularly for updates and news.

Your child must also read daily for at least 15 minutes, alone and/or with a family member. We also strongly encourage nightly review of basic math facts to 18. In addition, 5-10 minutes set aside for conversation specifically focused on the daily activities in school is highly recommended.

We recommend that your child have a regular space to do homework. Also, paper (lined and unlined), pencils, scissors, ruler, pencil sharpener, and glue may be needed for homework assignments. Your child should NOT bring these additional supplies to school.

Questionnaire
We would appreciate it if you would fill out the enclosed questionnaire. This information will give us a head start in understanding your child’s needs. Please return the questionnaire by Friday, August 28th.

Friday Folders
Students will bring home a “Friday Folder” every week. It will include all the tests and graded work completed during class. Not all work done in school will be included in this folder (we keep a file of work from students to review with parents at Parent-Teacher conferences). Please review and take all the contents out. Friday folders are due back at school on Mondays.

Scholastic Book Orders
We will send a book order form once a month. The completed form will be due one week from the day it comes home. Please make all checks out to Scholastic. You can now order books online and pay with credit card. More information will be sent out with the first flier. The more books your child is exposed to the more they will develop their reading skills.

Communication
Again, please write a note in your child’s student agenda book if you have any immediate questions or comments. First Homework Assignment

5 Clues in a Bag
Homework Assignment
Due Thursday, August 27th

Dear Second Graders,

Here is your very first homework assignment this year. We can’t wait to hear all about your summer adventures. Let’s play a game! Can you guess what I did this summer?

Here are the rules:

Collect 5 items that are clues to things you did over the summer that will fit in the zip lock bag provided to you in your homework folder.

For example, a toy airplane could represent a trip you took with your family. Goggles could represent swim lessons that you took. A movie ticket could represent a favorite movie you saw this summer. You may use real items, (ex. coins from a foreign country, key chain from Disneyland, shells from the beach) pictures from the internet, photos that you have taken or take a photo of something that doesn’t fit in your bag.

1. Please do not include clothing or valuable items.
2. Use the bag provided (bigger bags or items will not be accepted).
3. All bags and items will be returned, however do not include items that need to be returned right away.

We will be writing about and displaying our summer bag adventures in our classroom.

You will be sharing your bag with another classmate who will try and guess what you did this summer.

Sound interesting? Great! You may begin!

Be creative and have fun!

Mrs. Callanen and Mrs. Sederstrom

Welcome!

August 26, 2009

Dear Second Grader,

Welcome to our class! We are glad that you are here!

We have high expectations for you this year. We expect you to work hard. We expect you to do your best. We expect you to listen carefully and to ask questions when you do not understand. How will you show respect this year?

In return, you can expect a lot from us. We will work hard and we will do our best. We will explain things as clearly as we can. We will listen to your questions and your comments and we will help you solve problems. We will treat you with kindness and we will remember that you are a special person with your own ideas and feelings.

We want you to learn and to enjoy school. Learning is fun! Do your best each and every day. What an exciting year it will be. We know that you can’t wait for First Communion, writing in cursive and our very own Wax Museum. With all of us working together we will have an excellent year!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Sederstrom
Mrs. Callanen
