Week of June 1st
Welcome Parents!
We can't believe it's June already! We hope that everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend! We have finished our last Reading unit and will be taking our unit test all week. In Math, we are continuing to work on learning how to tell time. In Social Studies, we are working on how to be a good friend. In English, we are learning about sentences and sentence structure. We will not have a Spelling test this week because of the test, but we will have reporters. The entire school has mass on Friday at 9:15 to celebrate the 8th grade; their graduation will be later that day at 6pm.

Week of May 24
Welcome Parents!
Thank you for all the hard work you and your child put into the Career Reports! It was wonderful to see the students present. We had a wonderful field trip to the fire station on Friday. Thanks to all the parents who helped, especially Paula Dionne and Nina Mueller for being great room moms! We have another fun Friday to look forward to this week! Activity Day is Friday! We hope to see some of you there! Students will wear their P.E. uniforms. They may wear ball caps or visors but not sunglasses. Please be sure to put sunscreen on your child BEFORE school. Please bring in a dollar for the cake walk and canned goods. There is a contest amongst the activity day teams to see who can bring in the most canned goods! We will not be having Reporters this week and our Spelling test will be on Thursday. The following Monday, May 31st, there is no school for Memorial Day!
This week we are studying r-controlled vowels and the -tion sound as well as the comprehension strategy, making good judgments. In Math, we have moved on from money and are now learning how to tell time on an analog clock. In English we will be working on grammar. In Social Studies, we will be learning about what it means to be a kind friend.

Week of May 3, 2010
Welcome Parents!
Congratulations to all who made their First Holy Communion this weekend! Happy May! This week St. Jerome is trying out a new lunch system. The students will play the first 20 minutes of lunchtime and eat during the last 20 minutes. Some school districts have implemented this system and it has shown to increase learning and decrease visits to the health office in the afternoon hours.
In Reading, we will be working on the long e sound as well changing words from singular to plural. We are continuing to work on 3-digit addition and subtraction in Math and we will complete our chapter on Thursday with the Ch. 9 test. In English, we will have a test on Tuesday on adverbs. In Social Studies, we will begin working on our Career Reports, so please make sure your child returns their outline on Tuesday along with one other resource that they can use (i.e. book, article, etc)!

Week of April 25
Welcome Parents! We hope you enjoyed the Carnival! The rides and booths will be taken down on Monday; drop off and pick up will remain in the U-shape. Regular car line will resume on Tuesday. We will continue to practice for 1st Communion during Religion. First Communion is this Sunday at the 9:00 am Mass. The students will need to arrive at 8:30 and meet in the back of the church. We look forward to this important milestone in your child's faith. We also encourage those who are not making their 1st Communion to come to mass on Sunday to support their friends as they receive their sacrament!
In Math, the students have done a great job with the addition of three-digit numbers. We are starting a new unit in Reading and will have a Spelling test on Friday. We are studying the long -e sound spelled "ie" and "ey" and the -gh, -ph, and -lf sounds as well as determining the difference between realism and fantasy. We are continuing our work with adverbs in English.
We welcome Ms. Levin to the St. Jerome staff as the Science teacher. Mr. Deltoro will be taking over the position of 8th grade homeroom/Jr. High Math teacher for the remainder of this year.
In Social Studies we will be hosting a career day. We have parent volunteers coming in on Tuesday and Thursday to discuss their professions with the class. The students will be bringing home a Career Report Outline this week. The students will choose someone to interview (either in person or over the phone) about their career. They will use the interview as the basis for an in-class report. Please look for more information about the report requirements in your child's Take Home folder.

Welcome Parents!
Hope you enjoyed the four day weekend!
We have implemented a new incentive system in the classroom. Students can earn raffle tickets during the school day for positive behavior. Every Friday we will have a raffle! Encourage your children to keep earning those raffle tickets!
We are continuing to work on our reading comprehension and have begun a book club for the entire class two days a week. We are still working with place value in Math. We have completed the final drafts for our "How To Reports." Stop by and take a look at your child's writing some time. In Social Studies we are learning about economics and how money is used in our country. There is a letter going home today asking for parent volunteers for a Career Day at the end of next month!

March already? Friday concludes the 2nd trimester. We will be having our Unit 4 Reading Test on Monday and Tuesday as well as a Social Studies test on Thursday. Welcome Parents,
We can't believe it's already the last week of February! Where has the month gone? We have a regular schedule this week. We will still be working on subtraction in math. We will also be studying the vowel patterns -aw and -ough, and the consonants -gn, -wh, and -wr in reading.
Reminder:
Please make sure your child's first and last name is written on all personal belongings. There have been a lot of items, recently, turned into the "Lost and Found" with no names.
The 2nd trimester ends on Friday March 5th! All make-up tests and quizzes need to be complete before then.
Soup Night is Wednesday Feb. 24th!

Happy President's Day! We hope everyone enjoyed their long Valentine's Day weekend. This week is another fun week in 2nd grade! In math, we are still working on subtraction with regrouping. Our phonics this week focuses on the vowel pattern a, al, and au; our other concentration is silent consonants. In English, we are finishing our unit on adjectives and will take the Unit 4 test on Thursday. Lastly, our social studies lessons this week will be centered around President's Day.
Reminders:
Ash Wednesday is Wednesday Feb. 17th! Please arrive by 7:45 a.m. as we have an all school mass at 8 a.m. The first soup night will also be that night!

Welcome Parents!
We hope you enjoyed seeing our classroom at Open House last week. We enjoyed seeing you again and we hope you had an opportunity to view some of your child's work.
This week is regular schedule with the exception of Friday, February 12th. Since Valentine's Day falls on a weekend this year, we will be having our party on Friday Feb. 12th. If your child wishes to hand out valentines to the class, please make sure that you have one for every child in the class. We have 25 students. Your child may sign their name on the card, but please DO NOT address the cards. The students will be placing one valentine on each student's desk.
This week we will also be starting a new unit in math. We will be working on subtraction that involves regrouping or "borrowing" as it is also known. This is a new concept for the students and some may need extra help with their homework.

January 23rd- Sacrament of Reconciliation
9:30am (in the church)
Before January 23rd the children need to know the 10 Commandments (in order). I hope you have already begun the memorization process over the break. The children will be assessed over these next couple of weeks. Let me know if you need another copy of the 10 Commandments.
