Week of May 3, 2010

Welcome Parents!
Congratulations to all who made their First Holy Communion this weekend! Happy May! This week St. Jerome is trying out a new lunch system. The students will play the first 20 minutes of lunchtime and eat during the last 20 minutes. Some school districts have implemented this system and it has shown to increase learning and decrease visits to the health office in the afternoon hours.

In Reading, we will be working on the long e sound as well changing words from singular to plural. We are continuing to work on 3-digit addition and subtraction in Math and we will complete our chapter on Thursday with the Ch. 9 test. In English, we will have a test on Tuesday on adverbs. In Social Studies, we will begin working on our Career Reports, so please make sure your child returns their outline on Tuesday along with one other resource that they can use (i.e. book, article, etc)!

Week of April 25

Welcome Parents! We hope you enjoyed the Carnival! The rides and booths will be taken down on Monday; drop off and pick up will remain in the U-shape. Regular car line will resume on Tuesday. We will continue to practice for 1st Communion during Religion. First Communion is this Sunday at the 9:00 am Mass. The students will need to arrive at 8:30 and meet in the back of the church. We look forward to this important milestone in your child's faith. We also encourage those who are not making their 1st Communion to come to mass on Sunday to support their friends as they receive their sacrament!

In Math, the students have done a great job with the addition of three-digit numbers. We are starting a new unit in Reading and will have a Spelling test on Friday. We are studying the long -e sound spelled "ie" and "ey" and the -gh, -ph, and -lf sounds as well as determining the difference between realism and fantasy. We are continuing our work with adverbs in English.

We welcome Ms. Levin to the St. Jerome staff as the Science teacher. Mr. Deltoro will be taking over the position of 8th grade homeroom/Jr. High Math teacher for the remainder of this year.

In Social Studies we will be hosting a career day. We have parent volunteers coming in on Tuesday and Thursday to discuss their professions with the class. The students will be bringing home a Career Report Outline this week. The students will choose someone to interview (either in person or over the phone) about their career. They will use the interview as the basis for an in-class report. Please look for more information about the report requirements in your child's Take Home folder.
